New School Opens on Lower Similkameen Indian Band Territory: A Community Achievement
The Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) proudly opened their brand-new school on Monday, January 6, 2025. This remarkable project is a shining example of what can be accomplished through community collaboration. The school was built as a joint effort between the LSIB, government grants, and corporate partnerships.
The school replaces the old setup of four small portable units across the street, now offering a state-of-the-art just over 13,000-square-foot facility designed to foster learning and growth. The new amenities include modern classrooms, a soccer field, a basketball court, and two playgrounds.
The school provides education from preschool to Grade 7 and features a robust support system for students. Highlights include near door-to-door busing in the area and a comprehensive food program offering breakfast, snacks, and lunch daily. Recognizing that a well-nourished child learns better, this program ensures every student is set up for success.
The student-to-teacher ratio is another standout feature, with one teacher for every seven students, not including additional support staff. Currently, the school has 35 children enrolled but has the capacity to accommodate up to 80 students. Parents are encouraged to register early for the upcoming school year in September.
We thank Principal Stuart Krestell for allowing us to visit the school. This school is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together.
